High-end Mediterranean-Japanese fusion restaurant Zela will make its UK debut at the ME Hotel on the Strand, backed by a team of restaurateurs and sports stars.

Owned by the Mabel Hospitality group - which also owns the Tatel group of Spanish restaurants in Madrid, Ibiza and Miami – Zela opened its first site in Ibiza last year. Investors in the company include Cristiano Ronaldo, Enrique Iglesias, Rafael Nadal and NBA player Pau Gasol.

The restaurant will serve ‘meppon’ small plates, combining Mediterranean products with Japanese techniques. Dishes will include sushi; temaki; dim sum; and ceviche. Dishes will include butter fish with white truffle; tuna tartar with fried egg; oxtail gyoza; and sunomono with calamari.

Mediterranean-influenced dishes will include the likes of scallops with Iberican sobrasada; usuzukuri of pan con tomate; and rice chips with cured wagyu, burrata and nori.

Main dishes at the Ibizan iteration of the restaurant include fried rice with truffle and onsen tomago; tuna teriyaki with Iberican vegetable noodles; and tempura prawn soba noodles.

A breakfast menu will include continental and English breakfast options alongside the likes of miso soup, pickles and nori.

A cocktail bar will offer a list of 20 cocktails including the ‘Coco Chanel’ made with Belvedere vodka, lychee, grapefruit, raspberry and sugar; and the ‘Harakiri’ made with sake, lime, egg white and shiso syrup.

“We’re delighted to be bringing ZELA to London, a city that has proved itself as the dining capital of the world," says Aitor Samperio, managing director of Mabel Hospitality.

"The diversity of London´s culinary scene provides an exciting opportunity for us to showcase our take on Japanese meets Mediterranean cuisine.”
