Michelin-starred Indian restaurant Tamarind in Mayfair has named the two head chefs who will lead its reopening in October.

Karunesh Khanna and Manav Tuli will oversee what the restaurant describes in an announcement as a "fresh new concept" when it relaunches after a six-month closure.

It comes after former head chef Peter Joseph left Tamarind earlier this year after a decade.

Khanna was head chef at London’s Michelin-starred Amaya for 13 years, while Tuli led the kitchen at Chutney Mary in St James’.

Tamarind opened in London in 1995 and won a Michelin star in 2001.

Khanna says the revamp will see the restaurant move “to a different level in the market”.

“[The] chance to be a part of this exciting journey and take an already fantastic brand to these new heights is something I found impossible to turn down,” says Khanna.

The menu will feature sharing dishes with options light enough for lunch, which the restaurant says is a “move away from the richness and heavy connotations of Indian food”.

The chefs have taken inspiration from flavours and techniques across India, using ingredients such as Scottish Orkney scallops, Chilean sea bass and Madagascan prawns.

“We’ll be creating something new and exciting and I couldn’t resist this challenge,” says Tuli.
