Beef & Brew to open second site in former pub

Affordable steak restaurant Beef & Brew has confirmed plans to open its second London site next month.

The group, which serves “quality steak without the price tag”, has taken on the former Duke’s Brew & Que gastropub in Haggerston.

Ex-Murano chef Jessica Simmons and former City worker Daniel Nathan launched the original Beef & Brew in Kentish Town in 2015, and it is recommended in the Michelin Guide.

The team raised over £250,000 on equity crowdfunding platform Seedrs in late 2017 to help grow the business to a second site.

The new restaurant will take cues from the building’s history as the Duke of York pub, which dates back to 1822 - and will put its original name above the door.

Craft beers will be available on tap, alongside specialist beer flights and a pairing menu to accompany each dish.

The new extended menu includes a half pint of fried oysters with a yuzu dressing; and brisket on toast with pickles and gravy.

Steak will still be the star of the show, with each cut dipped in beef dripping before being chargrilled.  The signature hanger steak and chips for £10 will be on offer during the week from 6-7pm, alongside sides of smoked aubergine with honey and miso; and sweet potato with coconut yoghurt and spices.

Nathan says: “It’s exciting to bring quality steaks that don’t break the bank to an even wider audience in East London - we’re moving into a beautiful old pub, where we can welcome locals for everything from a beer and a bar snack to a lazy Sunday roast, and continue to champion amazing small producers.”
