Mamuska makes moves on its long-awaited expansion plans

South London Polish restaurant Mamuska is finally making headway with the expansion plans it has been promising for over seven years.

The restaurant, which currently operates from a 60-cover site in London’s Elephant and Castle, will launch its second site later this year in the new Leake Street Arches development near Waterloo.

Comprising 240 covers inside and 40 outside, the restaurant will be almost four times bigger than its first and second iterations. The restaurant initially launched as a 60-cover dining room in the Elephant and Castle shopping centre, which later relocated to a site on the other side of the Elephant and Castle roundabout.

Interiors by Gabor Gallov Architects will be industrial, incorporating the railway arches of the Leake Street development, which will launch its first phase on 16 June.

Founder Ian Coll says that the company is already looking for a location to open a third restaurant, with the aim of “educating Brits and other Europeans on the wonders and delights of Polish food and drink”.

Mamuska serves traditional Polish food, with dishes including ‘watrobki’ (chicken livers) with bread and butter; Polish winter root vegetable salad; pierogi dumplings; and ‘golonka’, a slow-roasted pork knuckle with salads and mashed potato.

In defence of his decision to start expansion during a period in which many other casual dining restaurants are struggling, Coll says that Mamuska historically has profited during spells of low consumer confidence due to its low prices and self-service model.
