Bar 44 heads to Bristol for first restaurant outside of Wales

The tapas restaurant, owned by siblings Tom, Owen and Natalie Morgan, launched 16 years ago, and will open its first site in England in Bristol’s Clifton Village in July.

The restaurant, which imports many of its ingredients including cheese, gin and sherry from Spain, was founded in Wales’ Cowbridge before moving into Penarth and Cardiff.

The group opened sister restaurant Asador 44 last year, which specialises in ‘asador’ style dry-aged Galician ox and beef cooked over fire. The new opening on Clifton’s Regent Street will offer traditional tapas with a modern twist as at the siblings’ original restaurants.

Dishes at the group’s other restaurants include sobrasada ibérica and honey on toast with Mallorcan black pig chorizo; Giant queen olives marinated in lemon, black pepper and parsley; crispy fried baby shrimp from Cádiz; seared spiced tuna, mojo verde, samphire and crispy onion; patatas bravas; crispy violet artichoke, caramelised pepper, red onion, pine nut and oloroso.

“I’m so excited about the space we have inherited,” says founder Tom Morgan.

“After a complete redesign, we will open in July and I can already picture a busy, bustling tapas bar which will hopefully become a real hub of the community.”
