Friday Five: the week's top news
- The industry has been paying tribute to MasterChef: The Professionals finalist Matt Campbell, who passed away after competing in the London Marathon last weekend. Thousands of people have signed up to race 3.7 miles in his memory this weekend, and to raise money for the Brathay Trust.
- Its the end of an era at Duck & Waffle with the departure of chef director Dan Doherty after six years. Doherty, who led the opening team at the 24-hour restaurant in 2012, says he is planning to announce news of his next restaurant project "very soon".
- A Cardiff restaurant has apologised after tweeting the personal details of a customer who didn't arrive for their reservation. Bully's owner Russell Bullimore says the post was been "fuelled by emotion" after he became increasingly frustrated with no-shows, which he claims costs the business around £50,000 a year.
- Byron has launched a new menu championing 'burger diversity' after closing 20 sites since January. The 14 new dishes include a wider range of vegan and vegetarian dishes, and a 'flexitarian' burger patty made with 70% beef and 30% mushrooms. CEO Simon Cope says the group is attempting to "build a new Byron".
- Clare Smyth has been named the elit Vodka World's Best Female Chef 2018 ahead of the World's 50 Best Restaurants ceremony in Bilbao, Spain on 19 June. The Core chef-patron says she is hoping to use the platform to support other women in the industry.
