Nuno Mendes to launch intimate supperclub this spring
Located at on Chance Street, the restaurant, Maos, will form part of a new ‘Blue Mountain School’ project launching on 3 April.
The project, which the chef and restaurateur has been planning for two years, is in collaboration with his friend James Brown.
"I am delighted to announce my new project: Mãos, a kitchen, table and wine room,” Mendes posted on Instagram.
"An idea conceived with my good friend James Brown, Mãos has been two years in the making. It is an intimate space to create. Culinary freedom, exploration and shared experience."
Records from Tower Hamlets Council show Mendes and Brown applied for planning permission in June 2017. They show that the venue has always been intended to be small, as the “proposed operation would be for no more than 16 clients at any one time who will pre-book.”
The records also detail pricing for the supper clubs as £125 per head, with the cost of the alcohol wine pairing to each course at £75 per head.
The planning application does not list the project as a restaurant, because “they feel that it is more unique”.
Booking is live although weekend seats are now limited as a result of high demand and interest in the project.
Last week, Mendes closed his Portuguese Taberna de Mercado restaurant in Spitalfields.
The chef has moved the operation into a smaller unit forming part of the Old Spitalfields Market ‘The Kitchens’ development, as part of what is believed to be a measure to cut costs following a difficult trading year in 2017.
