Joe's Southern Table to close in April as Maxwell's Bar moves in to the site
American diner Maxwell’s Bar and Grill is closing its restaurant in Covent Garden’s James Street next month to relocate to the site currently occupied by Joe’s Southern Table and Bar.

Maxwell’s, which has traded from the James Street site for 25 years, will close on the 8th April, reopening at the new location on King Street two days later, serving the brand’s signature burgers, steaks, ribs, wings and ‘freakshakes’ alongside some of the most popular dishes from the Joe’s Southern Table menu.

The closures and relocation come as the lease on the Maxwell’s Bar and Grill site is draws to an end.

“In an ever-changing London market, Maxwell’s Bar and Grill has stood the test of time but in the face of unsustainable rent increases, the group had to consider more viable business options,” says Maxwell’s Restaurant Group operations director Jim Robertson.

“The opportunity to relocate to new premises allows us as a business to continue operating in Covent Garden as well as consider new opportunities across London.”

Joe’s Southern Table and Bar, which has operated at the King Street site since 2013 and is also owned by the Maxwell’s Restaurant Group, is expected to reopen at a new location outside of the Covent Garden area in the future.

“It’s been an amazing four years and we are so grateful to our team, family and friends who have made the experience unforgettable,” says Robertson.

“There is still a massive appetite for Joe’s and we’ll be re-opening in a new location later on in 2018.

The decision to close Joe’s and relocate Maxwell’s is because the latter has been a Covent Garden institution since 1979, and has a dedicated fan following.

“It was important that as a brand we continued our Covent Garden story [for Maxwell’s], close to where it all began so many years ago,” says Robertson.

“Joe’s is a newer concept which we envisage working in different and more flexible spaces in, around and outside of Covent Garden in the future.”
