"Passion does not pay the bills" - Deeson's closes with plea to support independent restaurants

A Canterbury restaurant recommended in the Michelin Guide has closed its doors with a plea for diners to support independent businesses.

Deeson's, which specialised in British dishes, has shut after nine years.

A note posted on the restaurant’s Twitter account said: “We are very sorry to announce that we have been left with no option but to close Deeson's with immediate effect.

“The cost of running a restaurant such as Deeson's in the current financial climate has proven just too much. Passion, unfortunately, does not pay the bills.

“We would like to thank all our loyal customers who have supported us over the years and especially, thank all our fantastic staff past and present.

“Please support your local and independent businesses in these challenging times.”

Since tweeting the announcement Deeson's has managed to find job offers for around 20 members of staff affected by the closure.

The restaurant was recommended in the Michelin Guide, but does not hold a star or Bib Gourmand.

Both independent restaurants and chains have been hit by tough trading conditions over the past year.

Last month the team behind Norse in Harrogate posted a blog admitting its profits hadn’t been ‘adding up’ and asking customers to ‘use us or lose us’.

Nuno Mendes also took to Instagram in December to admit that his ‘beloved’ Taberna do Mercado in London’s Spitalfields almost closed in 2017 after taking some ‘major hits’.

In December 2017 a business confidence survey by CGA found that more than three quarters of leaders in the eating and drinking out sectors cited the increasing cost of raw materials and business rates as having negatively affected their business.
