Former Bluebird chef takes over Michelin-starred Butchers Arms

Former Grain Store and Bluebird head chef Mark Block has taken over the Michelin-starred gastropub The Butchers Arms.

The chef has purchased the Eldersfield site with his wife Jo-Anne off a guide price of £750,000.

Block cooked at D&D London’s Bluebird for seven years and most recently headed up the kitchen at Benugo’s Stephen Street Kitchen at the British Film Institute.

The Butchers Arms’ previous owners James and Elizabeth Winter bought the pub in 2007 and it has held a Michelin star since 2011.

The 16th century property, which seats up to 45-covers in its dining room, was also named Michelin Pub of the Year in 2016.

Property agency Christie & Co handled the sale.

“Mark and Jo-Anne want to continue the business at the Butchers Arms in the same direction as it is currently operating, maintaining the excellent standard of food and keeping the warm, homely feeling that the pub brings,” says Nicholas Calfe, director at the Bristol office of Christie & Co.

The Winters have sold the pub to take a year off to travel the world with their family in a vintage VW camper van.
