Market favourite Popina secures premises in Mayfair

Long-standing baked goods market stall Popina is launching its first brick and mortar site next month in Mayfair.

Located on Duke Street, the restaurant and delicatessen will serve an all-day menu as well as selling a range of goods available at its various market stalls in the capital, including biscuits; pear and chocolate tarts; rhubarb and ginger cheesecake; and Serbian cheese burek made with barrel aged feta.

Open from 8am to 6pm, Popina will serve breakfast and brunch dishes including kedgeree, as well as lunch options including sandwiches, pies and salads.

Vegetarian and meat stews and curries will be on the menu for a more substantial meal, and dessert options will include sweet pastries and chocolate hazelnut cake.

Run by Isidora Popović, Popina operates at over 20 weekly markets, including King’s Cross, Portobello Road and Broadway Market. Popovic, who has been trading for almost 20 years, is a well-known face in the market scene.

The brand was established in 1999 with support from The Prince’s Trust, and has gone on to supply biscuits to big-name retailers including Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, Harvey Nichols and Whole Foods.

Popina is the latest in a long line of market stalls that have graduated to a standalone restaurant. Several of the UK’s casual brands started as street food or market vendors, including Claw, Pizza Pilgrims, Rosa’s Thai, Pitt Cue Co, Zoe’s Ghana Kitchen, MEATliquor and Homeslice.
