Anna Hansen’s Finsbury Square restaurant The Modern Pantry has closed suddenly, ceasing trade on 15 December.

The restaurant, housed in the Alphabeta building, was the second of the same name from chef Anna Hansen, who continues to run its Clerkenwell site.

The Finsbury Square restaurant had been trading for just over two years.

The Modern Pantry is known for its Antipodean and international small plates including masala roast venison with beetroot, mango and tomatillo som tam, and blackberry vinaigrette; shichimi roast sea trout, wakame, salted cabbage & hijiki salad, with miso dressing; and braised oxtail dumpling, miso mustard, and parsley vinaigrette.

The website for the restaurant’s Finsbury Square site is no longer live, and a pre-recorded phone message tells callers: “The Modern Pantry team regret to inform you that our Finsbury Square location is no longer open. It is business as usual at Clerkenwell, however, so if you’d like to book, please do so via our website or give them a call.

“Thank you very much for all of your support.”

“It is with much sadness that we announce that The Modern Pantry Finsbury Square is no longer open,” Hansen wrote in the restaurant’s latest newsletter.

“We’ve had a blast in the City and would like to thank you all for dining with us over the last two years.”

The original Modern Pantry was launched in Clerkenwell in 2008. The much anticipated Finsbury Square follow up came seven years later.

The Modern Pantry is part-owned by Des Gunewardena, founder of D&D London restaurant group. D&D  operates 36 restaurants in London, Leeds and New York, Paris and Tokyo including The Bluebird, Le Pont de la Tour and Quaglino’s.
