Subway becomes next major brand to enter delivery sector

Subway UK is planning to trial a delivery service in London in the New Year.

The sandwich chain has been offering home delivery from a number of individual regional franchises in recent months, which has been sufficiently successful for it to draw up plans for  a launch in the capital.

It is the latest major brand to enter the delivery market, with McDonald’s launching in June with UberEats, and Greggs following suit in October with an ongoing trial in Newcastle, Manchester and the City of London.

“Subway is always looking at new innovative ways to meet our customers’ increasing demands, including home delivery," a spokesperson told BigHospitality's sister website MCA.

“Currently in the UK we have individual franchisees who have partnered with third party food delivery companies, offering the service on a store by store basis.

“Due to its success, the brand will be trialling a delivery service in London in the new year and we look forward to releasing further details very soon.”

Subway is 100% franchised in the UK, and opened its 2,500th store over the summer.

The UK & Ireland business is looking to launch a number of new formats such as kiosks, pop-ups and mobile sites as part of its bid to reach 3,000 stores by 2020.

Subway also launched its ‘Fresh Forward’ new-look store earlier this year, with new branding and layout.
