Shuang Shuang launches Korean BBQ and Chinese hotpot fusion pop up

Chinatown restaurant Shuang Shuang is launching a pop up concept, Mookrata, combining its existing hotpot options with a Korean barbecue selection.

Diners at the Shaftesbury Avenue restaurant will be seated around hotpots with grill domes atop, and given a selection of raw ingredients.

They can choose to either barbecue the ingredients with tongs on the grill plate, or cook them in the hot pot broth. Meat options will comprise raw meats like marinated pork; pork belly; black pepper beef; and rib eye.

Vegetable options include choi sum; julienne cabbage; and assorted mushrooms as well as noodles and Korean rice cakes.

To complete the dish, diners will have the option of a selection of dipping sauces, including lime and chilli; hot and sour; and a special ‘Mookrata’ sauce.

The extent of the choices means that diners can tailor their meals to suit their particular tastes, although recipe cards will also be available.

Originally from a Teochew-Thai background, Sundravorakul was inspired to open Shuang Shuang after travelling extensively across Taiwan, China and Japan and tasting regional varieties of the dish.

Owner Fah Sundravorakul took inspiration for the pop up from his homeland of Thailand, where Chinese and Korean fusion cuisine is popular amongst locals.

“Bringing Mookrata to London has been both a nostalgic and exciting journey for me,” he says.

“Having spent my childhood in Thailand, I’m excited to bring a taste of home to London, and watch Londoners put their spin on it.”

The pop up will be open from midday until 11pm throughout the week, and until 11.30pm on the weekends.
