Mary-Ellen McTague is preparing to launch a crowdfunding campaign to open a restaurant and bakery in Chorlton, Manchester.

The chef has teamed up with baker Sophie Yeoman and designer Soo Wilkinson to open The Creameries in a former Edwardian creamery building in March 2018.

McTague was a sous chef at Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck and ran acclaimed Manchester restaurant Aumbry for five years until 2014.

Since the site's closure she has worked as a director at The Real Junk Food Project food waste cafe and overhauled the menu at Manchester Art Gallery.

Her new project will serve breakfast and a small lunch and supper menu based on British cheeses, sustainable fish and home-cured meats.

The team have already raised £60,000 to transform the site, but are now hoping to raise at least another £20,000 to buy their baking equipment.

“We have considered every aspect here”, says Wilkinson. “Be it the open bakery where people can watch their food being made, the edible plants on the walls, or the well-thought-out events programme we have put together - we want people to experience something new, and get together to share food and each other’s company.”

The Creameries will also offer a ‘pull out all the stops’ Sunday Sharing menu of fresh bread, meat roasted overnight in the bread oven, baker’s potatoes and ‘lots of puddings’, alongside children’s baking classes, art clubs, bread making workshops and wine and cheese tastings.
