Gunpowder team makes move out of Spitalfields

The team behind Gunpowder, Madame D and Gul & Sepoy has confirmed it will open a fourth restaurant, in Spring 2018.

Gunpowder Market Market will launch in the One Tower Bridge development as an evolution of the group’s original restaurant, Gunpowder.

The new site will be the only restaurant in the group’s portfolio located outside of the Spitalfields area.

Taking inspiration from Calcutta, where founders Harneet and Devina Baweja met, the restaurant will feature home-style Indian dishes served in a dining room alongside a bakery with takeaway options.

Home bakes to eat in or take away will include Goan sausage rolls; mutton sandwiches; and orange and cardamom tarts.

After 6pm the bakery space will become the restaurant’s wine bar, serving cheese toasties and pickles alongside a pre-theatre menu.

Nirmal Save, head chef at the eponymous original restaurant and at Madame D and Gul & Sepoy, will head up the kitchen at Market Market, serving some of his family recipes.

Owner Harneet says he has “some exciting plans for the space,” which will open in Spring, although the exact date is yet to be confirmed.

The Bawejas opened the original Gunpowder in Spitalfields in 2015 in a bid to introduce a new style of Indian dining to the UK. The restaurant won a Bib Gourmand, awarded to sites serving three courses for under £28, in the 2017 Michelin Guide.
