“I could have cried I was so happy”: Jason Atherton wins first US Michelin star
The chef launched the site in New York’s Edition Hotel with restaurateur Stephen Starr in 2015.
The 90-cover restaurant sits on the second floor of the iconic Metropolitan Life building and is headed up by chef de cuisine Danila Bogdan.
The Clocktower menu offers ‘modern cuisine with a UK sensibility’, with dishes including fish and chips; a whole Lancaster baked chicken with truffle and English muffins; and Hudson Valley foie gras and chicken liver parfait served with London stout, lentils and smoked duck.
The latest award brings Atherton’s tally to four Michelin stars worldwide within his Social Company group.
Atherton wrote on Instagram: “I can’t quite believe it when I found out, I could have cried I was so happy it means so much to us and the team. @dan_the_chef has worked tirelessly alongside James and our amazing team at @clocktowernyc to win a #onemichelinstarwith @stephen.starr and @editionhotelsNYC ...is just a dream. Thank you all and @michelinguide.”
The chef runs 17 restaurants in London, New York, Shanghai, Cebu, Sydney, Dubai and Hong Kong.
Atherton revealed at The Restaurant Congress this year that he is planning to open his Japanese concept Sosharu at the upcoming Edition hotel in Shanghai in 2018. He has also put the original London Sosharu up for sale with plans to relocate it from Clerkenwell to Mayfair.
The 2018 New York guide didn't hold good news for everyone. Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s eponymous flagship restaurant was demoted from three to two stars. It has held the top honour since the New York guide was first published in 2006.
Sushi Ginza Onodera became the first Japanese restaurant in the US to hold two stars after it was promoted from its single star rating.
