Carlisle hotel to welcome Penny Blue restaurant to its historic post office building
Located in the city centre’s old post office building, Penny Blue will open on 26 October as a ‘food and lounge’ concept.
Divided into ‘small packages’, ‘large parcels’ and ‘sweet post’ the menu will comprise a selection of modern tapas, starting with small plate options such as grilled asparagus, heritage tomato and burrata; braised Cumberland sausage with chorizo and red wine on sourdough; and braised beef poutine.
Larger main dishes include fish and chips; katsu curry; pulled pork with blue cheese in brioche; and roast chicken with vegetables. Desserts include roasted blueberry eton mess; and white chocolate bread and butter pudding.
The restaurant is named after the ‘penny blue’, one of the world’s oldest stamps. The interior design will pay homage to its location inside the 20th century post office building with features such as vintage post office artefacts decorating the booth seating areas. There will also be an open kitchen, high tables, a bar and private dining area.
The Halston, which also houses the Barton’s Yard bistro, has previously won Self-Catering Provider of the Year. Spaces within both restaurants are available to hire for events.
The hotel is undergoing expansion, with plans to add a new 19-apartment ‘Lonsdale Building’ and a six-room ‘Halston Townhouse’ by the end of 2017.
