184 Green and Grill joins the wave of new Notting Hill openings
Owned by mother and son team Alex Giri and Oscar Harris, the neighbourhood bar and restaurant will serve wood-fire grilled fish and meat alongside a selection of creative plant-based dishes.
Head chef Peter Tonge takes his experience from Tom Aikens’ kitchen, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Sydney’s Rockpool and New York’s Momofuku. The former vegetarian chef joins 184 from a previous post at Barbecoa.
Co-founder Giri is director of Waterways Restaurants, the company that launched Canal Brasserie, Cascabel and Portobello Road’s Ground Floor Bar and First Floor Restaurant, which is now closed.
"We are in the vanguard of flexitarian dining. If you go out to eat with four or five friends, work colleagues or family the chances are one person will want a steak but someone else will be vegetarian,” says Giri. “This is food for modern diners. We want to create a restaurant where everyone around the table will feel looked after.”
The site, renovated by Hanson Architects, will comprise a bright and modern dining space at ground level, with a downstairs bar offering cocktails and sharing plates.
The restaurant’s name is a homage to Notting Hill’s 192 restaurant, which was located just a few doors down and which hosted chefs including Rowley Leigh and Rose Gray.
The opening of 184 Green and Grill comes amid a wave of new restaurants launching in Notting Hill. Core by Clare Smyth, one of the year’s biggest openings, is Notting Hill based, as is Mam, a new Vietnamese barbecue restaurant from the Salvation in Noodles team.
The 108 Garage team's follow up, Southam Street, will be another newcomer to the neighbourhood when it opens later this year.
