Des McDonald to open a year-long residency on Selfridges rooftop

High profile restaurateur Des McDonald is teaming up with Selfridges to open a modern Italian restaurant on the Oxford Street department store’s rooftop.

A year-long residency, Il Tetto opens later this week (6 October) and is billed as a stylish all-day dining Italian restaurant that will serve classic Italian dishes with a contemporary twist.

McDonald has opened a number of residencies with Selfridges including the Alpine-themed Le Chalet and the foraging-themed Forest Restaurant & Cabin Bar.

Il Tetto (meaning ‘The Roof’) is inspired by Italy’s trattorias and will be headed by former L’Anima chef Luca Terraneo. His menu includes whipped air-dried cod, grilled polenta, charred roast pepper sauce; pumpkin tortelli with robiola fondue and crispy sage; and wood-fired Barnsley chop, white onions and seared fennel.

Il Tetto will also serve a selection of wood-fired pizzas and there will be a separate bar offering hot cocktails.

Matthew Hayes, formerly executive pastry chef for Corbin & King, has been appointed to the same role at the Des McDonald Group, and will oversee the pastry section and Il Tetto’s afternoon tea. His dessert menu includes the likes of iced lemon parfait, meringue, curd and biscuit; and chocolate and hazelnut mousse with caramelised hazelnuts.

“Our rooftop restaurants have been a great success and I’m excited that this will be extended to a year-long residency,” says McDonald. “We’ve got a great team for Il Tetto, Head Chef Luca has excellent pedigree and I’m really pleased to welcome Matthew Hayes as our new executive pastry chef, together they will be delivering a truly great Italian experience.”
