Gul & Sepoy

The team behind Spitalfields Indian restaurants Gunpowder and Madame D’s are opening 50-cover Gul & Sepoy, just around the corner on Commercial Street. The cuisine will be Indian, again, and the menu will be split into two parts. The ‘Gul’ side will focus on dishes inspired by the northwestern Indian banquets at the Raj palaces. The ‘Sepoy’ side will feature more rustic, provincial-style dishes based on what the soldiers of the old Indian army would have eaten. All the dishes will be sharing-style, served alongside a large list of Indian inspired cocktails.

Rochelle Canteen

Rochelle Canteen, one of Shoreditch’s best-kept restaurant secrets, is to launch a new central London site on 4 October. Owners Margot Henderson and her business partner Melanie Arnold are to open a cafe, restaurant and bar at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) near Buckingham Palace in October. The project will be somewhat less secluded than the original Rochelle Canteen, which the pair opened behind the walls of an old schoolyard in Shoreditch in 2006. Henderson and head chef Ben Coombs are planning to serve pumpkin soup; pheasant and trotter pie; and a whole pig’s head to share. The restaurant will open from 11am-11pm every day except Monday, with ‘affordable’ daily changing specials paired with a glass of wine.
