Run by a Gujarati family, Sakonis was founded in 1984 and has a well-established restaurant in Wembley. The site serves vegetarian dishes from across India, the rest of Asia and East Africa that are designed to be shared by the whole table.
Dishes include crispy bhajiya (potato slices fried in chickpea batter) and dhokla (steamed semolina cakes served with coriander chutney). There will also be smaller snack-style dishes, influenced by Indian street food, such as bhel (puffed rice, crushed puri and vegetables, and tamarind sauce).
The restaurants are unlicensed. The drinks menu includes fresh fruit juices, milkshakes and coffee, alongside more traditional Indian choices such as masala chai; bombay rose lassi with cardamom; fresh ‘madaf’ coconut water; and faluda, a “special sweet drink”.
“We are passionate about providing a diverse array of flavoursome, high quality, vegetarian dishes for our customers” says owner Kavita Thakrar. “We have always been ethically and environmentally conscious when it comes to our cooking, and are very excited to have the opportunity to bring our flavours, values and signature dishes to the people of Hatch End.”
The Uxbridge Road restaurant launches later this week.
