Mare Street Market will open in Keltan House, an 8,800 sq ft converted warehouse close to London Fields Park, this winter.
The development will include a bar, restaurant and deli serving craft beer, a ‘vast’ wine selection and a menu created by Mendes.
The ‘spacious’ dining hall will also house concession stands from local businesses, as well as a record shop and florist.
Mare Street Market is Mendes’ first major project since he failed crowdfunding £1.75m to re-open his Michelin-starred restaurant Viajante last year.
The original Viajante closed its doors in Bethnal Green in 2014, and Mendes – who is also executive chef at Chiltern Firehouse - opened Portuguese restaurant Taberna do Mercado in London’s Old Spitalfields Market in 2015.
Mere Street Market will be his first project with Barworks, which is also behind The Diner restaurant group.
“For Hackney council, finding the right tenant who will add to the energy and buzz of London Fields was absolutely crucial, and no doubt Barworks, which has created some of London’s most exciting places to eat and drink, will do exactly that with their latest venture," says Craig Fisher, founder and managing director of CF Commercial.
Property firm CF Commercial acted on behalf of Hackney Council in the deal and AG&G advised Barworks.
