Borough Market launches crowdfunding appeal to support traders

Borough Market has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support traders and workers struggling with financial losses during its temporary closure.

The JustGiving page is aiming to raise £50,000 and was kicked off with a £20,000 donation by the Trustees of Borough Market, United St Saviours Charity and Better Bankside.

The market and immediate surrounding area have remained closed since the terrorist attacks on 3 June while the police investigation takes place.

“An atrocity of this magnitude has many hidden victims,” said Donald Hyslop, chair of the Borough Market Trust.

“Among these are the independent traders and producers who rely upon Borough Market for their livelihood. With the market still closed and with valuable stock lost, some of these traders—although none would be quick to admit it—are struggling.

“If any of these traders, whose skill and dedication make the market such a wonderful asset, were to find the viability of their work threatened by this act of violence, the result would be to add a sad injustice to a terrible tragedy.

“Anyone who wishes to support this fund will find their generosity gratefully received. There was never any doubt in my mind that the market’s community would pull together in a crisis, but it is nonetheless humbling to see that solidarity in action."

Restaurants and pubs in the market have paid tribute to the actions of staff and customers during last Saturday’s events.

A planned gathering of hospitality workers and operators at the market, which BigHospitality reported on last week, has also been postponed until further notice.

At the time of writing the campaign has raised over £29,000 from 245 supporters.
