Restaurants due to open soon at the shipping container development include Cargo Cantina, a taco bar inspired by the cantinas of Mexico City that is the sister restaurant to Bristol tapas restaurant Bravas, and Gopal’s Curry Shack. Gopal’s, which began life in 2011 as a supper club, will serve dishes such as wild garlic pakoras and onion bhaji scotch eggs.
Other new restaurants due to open there this year include Tare, a collaboration between Jes Rowly and Matt Hampshire, who have worked in some of Bristol’s top restaurants including Riverstation, Lido and Wilsons. Tare will serve four-course and seven-course set menus of regularly changing dishes, and will also offer vegetarian and vegan menus.
Michelin-starred chef Josh Eggleton, who already runs chicken restaurant Chicken Shed at the harbourside location, has chosen the location in which to open a second of his Salt & Malt fish and chip restaurants. Salt beef sandwich trader The Pickled Brisket and Greek street food trader The Athenian will also open their first permanent sites at Cargo 2 later this year.
Wapping Wharf has also been chosen as the location for a second Spuntino, the Italian/New York concept launched in London by the team behind Italian small plates restaurant group Polpo in 2011. The move follows the opening of a Polpo in nearby Exeter earlier this year.
“The fact that we will open a Spuntino in Wapping Wharf highlights how much confidence we have in Bristol, says Polpo managing director Luke Bishop.
