Ostrich egg on the menu at new London restaurant

Ostrich eggs large enough to feed six people are on the menu at a new London restaurant opening on the South Bank.

Florentine will offer the dish as alternative to the traditional full English when it launches opposite Lambeth North tube station this month.

The £65 ostrich egg will be served either fried or scrambled in a giant dish for six people to share, alongside generous helpings of mushrooms, tomatoes, streaky bacon, sausages and black budding.

Ostrich eggs usually take around two hours to hard boil and at 2kg are roughly equivalent to 24 chicken’s eggs.

Fulham restaurant WingsEggs made headlines when it put both ostrich and emu eggs on its menu when it opened in 2015, but the site has since closed its doors.

For those less keen on giant eggs, Florentine's all-day dining menu will also offer a choice of tear and share flatbreads, with toppings such as chorizo, manchego cheese and black truffle.

Diners will be able to sit at an 8-cover counter around an open bread oven to watch their flatbread being prepared.

There will also be weekend specials such as Bottomless Brunch on Saturdays and slow-cooked Sunday roasts, including the ‘Tomahawk’ - a 35-day aged rib of beef shared between two people.

Drinks will range from British sparkling wine to a choice of 'superfood' fruit and vegetable cocktails, and a 45-bin wine list.

Florentine will open on 23 March.
