Top 50 Gastropubs: Yorkshire's Star Inn is number one
Yorkshire pub the Star Inn, Harome, has been named the best gastropub in the country at this year’s Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs Awards.

The full list was revealed and chef-patron Andrew Pern’s Michelin-starred gastropub was named number one at an exclusive awards ceremony hosted by TV celebrity chef Matt Tebutt at the Hermitage, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, this afternoon (30 January).

Kent pub the Sportsman, which topped the list in 2015 and 2016, came in at second place. Somerset pub the Pony & Trap rose from fifth to third.

The Morning Advertiser (MA)’s food and drink editor Nicholas Robinson said: “The list has been around for close to a decade now and it has never been so diverse.

“Gastropubs in the UK are the backbone of accessible and high-quality food, which is why we’ve seen such steep growth in the category.”

He added: “Every region now has a handful of great food pubs within easy reach that Brits can count on for a superb meal prepared by chefs whose skills wouldn’t be out of place in the world’s best restaurants.”

There were 24 new entries in the list this year, including double-Michelin-starred chef Daniel Clifford’s Essex gastropub the Flitch of Bacon and Great British Pub Awards Best Food Pub 2016 finalist the Compasses Inn, Crundale, Kent.

Rob Taylor, chef co-owner of the Compasses Inn, was named Gastropub Chef of the Year.

The Swan Inn, in Chiddingfold, Surrey, was named Newcomer of the Year while the Treby Arms in Devon, run by MasterChef: The Professionals 2012 winner Anton Piotrowski, won the specialist award for Best Front of House Team.
