The top 5 stories in hospitality this week 15/08 - 19/08

What were some of the top stories in hospitality this week? Here's our pick.

  • Michelin is to announce the new stars awarded in the upcoming 2017 Britain and Ireland Guide at a live event for the first time since 1911. Michael Ellis, international director of the Michelin Guides, will reveal the new entrants at a ceremony at The Institute of Engineering and Technology in London on 3 October.
  • Marriott International is to open its first ever hotel in Northern Ireland in 2018. The hospitality giant - which is undergoing a merger with Starwood to become the world's biggest hotel group - will launch the 188-room AC Hotel in Belfast following a £25m development.
  • Chef Neil Rankin is to launch his first solo venture, a whole animal barbecue restaurant called temper, in Soho on Bonfire Night. The menu is designed to be almost entirely waste-free, with leftover animal fat used to make tortillas and butter for an upstairs taco bar.
  • The Government's decision to introduce a sugar tax will be a 'burden' on pubs and restaurants, hospitality trade bodies have warned. The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) said the levy will push up soft drink prices and result in pubgoers paying more.
