Cornish couple win BII Licensee of the Year 2016

Rob and Lucy Brewer from the Rashleigh Arms in Charlestown, Cornwall, have been named as the British Institute of Innkeeping’s (BII) 2016 Licensee of the Year.

The award recognises the country's top performing licensees with a passion for the pub trade.

The couple beat stiff competition from a six-strong shortlist including Top 50 Gastropubs licensee Andrew Fishwick of London’s The Truscott Arms, and Great British Pub of the Year winner Glen Pearson from the Shibden Mill Inn, Halifax.

Judges were impressed by the Brewer’s destination Cornish pub with its strong food trade and focus on real ales – which make up nearly 30 per cent of the drinks menu.

The pair also showcased their knowledge on the National Living Wage, staff training, and how a win could help grow their business further.

Rob Brewer said: “We are so proud to be the winners of the Licensee of the Year Awards, especially as a Cornish pub. I think the number one economy in Cornwall is based around tourism, so anything that we can do that helps promote that is a massive plus.”

Lucy added that she hoped their success would encourage more people to enter the pub trade and offer a boost for the Cornish economy.

She said: “We're up to a 50-strong team now so we hope this kind of recognition will encourage people to consider working in hospitality and staying as well. But primarily, we hope our award win will help boost Cornwall's tourism and economy.”

This year is the first time third parties are able to nominate licensees for the awards, with BII CEO Mike Clist adding that the Brewer’s nomination was a ‘testament to their efforts’.

He said: “We were really impressed by Rob and Lucy as a shining example of running a licensed establishment. As well as enthusiasm and passion for the Great British pub industry, they’re also very involved in their local community making them a social hub for the picturesque seaside village of Charlestown.

“We want to congratulate all six licensees shortlisted as they all demonstrated a high level of skill and knowledge that showed why they’re leaders in the industry. We will continue to support all six finalists and are looking forward to seeing their businesses grow even further.”
