Caspian-style Iranian-Turkish restaurant Jan to open in London in June

Jan, a middle Eastern-style restaurant inspired by the Caspian flavours of Iran and Turkey, is set to open in south west London’s Clapham in June.

The 53-cover site at 78 Northcote Road has been founded by Faizan Iqbal, and be spread over three areas comprising the bar, a mirrored-ceiling dining area, and heated outdoors seating space.

The menu will centre on a charcoal oven, offering traditionally-cooked bread, meat, and vegetables, with dishes such as grilled lamb chops and slowly-roasted shoulder in a pomegranate glaze with chickpeas; sea bream with harissa and preserved Lemons, charred miso and tahini-spiced cauliflower; and Caspian Spiced Roast Chicken, served for two with cardamom and rosemary broth, and spiced aubergine.

There will also be smaller plates such as the courgette hummus, sumac chicken wings, lamb kofta skewers with pomegranate molasses, and rare beef salad with charred leeks, yoghurt and garlic dressing. Sides will include courgette salad with fresh herbs and Saganaki cheese, blackened sweet potatoes with crispy onion rings and spiced yoghurt and za’atar fried potatoes.

The bar’s cocktail menu will offer tea-infused cocktails, with Middle Eastern spices, and fruit such as pomegranate and lemon. All the juices and syrups will be made on-site, and there will also be an original Jan beer, which has been created for the restaurant by the Brew By Numbers craft brewery in London’s Bermondsey.

Décor-wise, there will be long tables for big group meals, an open kitchen showcasing the charcoal oven and grill, and the design will incorporate feature tiles, wooden flooring, and heavy gold wall frames.

Iqbal said: “Our aim is to create somewhere different in Clapham where guests can come and enjoy beautifully cooked, simple dishes with lots of Caspian flavours as well as well-made cocktails in fun and flamboyant surroundings.”
