Calls to boycott Donald Trump's Scottish hotels after 'bigoted' remarks
The billionaire front runner in the Republican presidential race has remained unrepentant in the face of global criticism after claiming the United States needed a ‘total and complete shutdown’ of Muslims entering the country.
He said his proposals were 'probably not politically correct, but I don’t care'.
Green MSP Patrick Harvie said Trump’s views were ‘increasingly fascist’ and has lodged a motion in the Scottish parliament calling for a boycott of his businesses.
The hotelier owns both the South Ayshire Trump Turnberry Resort and the Trump International Golf Links at Balmedie, Aberdeenshire.
Harvie said: “This bigoted blowhard of a man is being rightly condemned far and wide, and I'm confident that Scotland will reject his extremist rhetoric.”
He added that Trump had a ‘reputation for trampling over Scottish communities’ and that he could not see any ’self-respecting person wanting to spend money in his hotels and at his golf courses’.
“Trump is now more than just a vulgar attention-seeker; he represents truly dangerous ideas, and should not be tolerated,” said Harvie.
The motion states that ‘several of Mr Trump's statements during the Presidential campaign have been so extreme as to be widely compared with fascism’ and urges 'Scots and visitors to consider boycotting Mr Trump's Scottish hotels and golf courses’.
A petition calling on the Government to ban Trump from the UK on the grounds of ‘hate speech’ has reached over 100,000 signatures, the minimum number required for the motion to be considered for debate by Parliament.
