Street food traders to cook for Calais refugees
The Street Aid team, which includes traders The Roadery, Ruperts Street, What The Dickens? The Bowler and Fleisch Mob, has set up a fundraising campaign to raise £10k to pay for food that they will cook and distribute to refugees at the camp. Money will also be used to buy materials such as plastic sheeting, to protect refugees from the weather.
The proposed trip to the camp, which houses up to 3,000 migrants from war-torn countries such as Syria, Eritrea and Sudan, follows one in September where the Street Aid team cooked food and distributed sleeping bags, tents and coats to inhabitants.
Dan Shearman, founder of The Roadery, said with the worst of the winter weather yet to come, they felt January would be a good time to return.
“Through the pain and suffering they have endured to be forced from their own countries, the struggle and hundreds of miles traveling to bring themselves to safety, and the living conditions they are still forced to endure, these people still managed the strength to show us kindness. All they need is a little in return to give them a little comfort during the harsh winter," he said.
“In the run up to Christmas we appeal to peoples hearts during a season of good will. These amazing people have already been through so much, and deserve to have what every human being deserves - a hot meal in their belly and warm dry place to call home."
