Hospitality employers named and shamed for failing to pay minimum wage

Between them the businesses - including Spirit Pub Company and the Subway sandwich chain – owed workers over £19,411 in arrears.

The restaurants, hotels and pubs were listed among 115 employers who failed to pay their staff over £389,000.

Business Minister Nick Boles said: “Employers that fail to pay the minimum wage hurt the living standards of the lowest paid and their families.

“As a one nation government on the side of working people we are determined that everyone who is entitled to the National Minimum Wage receives it.

“Next April we will introduce a new National Living Wage which will mean a £900-a-year pay rise for someone working full time on the minimum wage and we will enforce this equally robustly.”

Businesses face £20k fine for underpaying staff​​

On 1 October the National Minimum Wage rose by 20p to £6.70 per hour for staff aged 21 and over. For 18 to 20 year-olds the rate is £5.30 per hour.

Employers have been warned that they could face fines of up to £20,000 per employee for failing to pay staff the correct rate.​

"It is vital that businesses are aware of [the] rate changes and their responsibility to their employees who will be entitled to an increase in their pay packets," the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said in a statement.

"If you are not paying at least the National Minimum Wage you are breaking the law."
