Pubs to pull 25m more pints for Rugby World Cup
The majority of the extra pints will be for UK residents, but with thousands of visitors coming to the UK a boost of around 5m pints is expected. It is estimated that the tournament could bring pubs an extra £86m on beer sales alone.
BBPA chief executive, Brigid Simmonds, said that pubs will be trying to make the most of the tournament with it being a ‘great opportunity’ to boost sales.
“Nothing can match the atmosphere of the Great British pub when it comes to big matches, apart from actually being there. And for those visiting the UK for the tournament, the pub is a huge attraction,” she said.
Members of the BBPA are offering rugby-themed beers and ales during the tournament along with a number of match-day offers.
Publicans are not the only group in the hospitality sector getting involved with the tournament with hotels and restaurants also cashing in on the rugby showcase; Square Pie is hosting a ‘Pie World Cup’ with 20 different flavoured pies from around the world available on match-days, Hilton Hotels is offering guests an international-inspired menu to coincide with the tournament, and Drake & Morgan are offering food and drink packages along with the opportunity to hire private match viewing rooms.
