Michelin-starred restaurant delivery service to launch

A new service delivering food and wine direct from London's Michelin-starred restaurants will launch in London in September.

SUPPER claims to be the first delivery service for fine-dining restaurants and will allow participating businesses to sell their food to customers in their own homes and offices.

The service, founded by former financial trader Peter Georgiou, has already signed up 19 restaurants in London, including Benares, Tamarind and M Restaurants and will look at adding more as well as launching in other cities in and outside the UK if successful.

Currently the service, which includes in-house sommelier services, will only deliver to Zone 1 in London with dishes on a restaurant's menu not considered able to travel well purposefully made unavailable.

Food is delivered in Supper-branded bags by uniformed drivers who ride ‘state-of-the-art’ Japanese bikes designed to get deliveries out quickly. Orders are able to cater for up to 20 people.

“A great deal of research and expense has been made to ensure that absolutely no degradation from the time the food is made until it’s delivered to their customers’ front door will occur,” said a spokesperson for SUPPER.

“Each of these revolutionary bikes consists of bespoke boxes, which are thermally lined through to the containers where the food is placed. The high tech boxes are kept at a constant temperature, either hot or cold to maintain the quality of the famous dishes.”

Customers are charged £5.95 for each delivery and a mandatory service charge of 9 per cent on top of the cost of the food.

"We decided this avoids the awkward tip scenario, plus it means we can charge the restaurants less, but still keep our model of how we generate money," said a spokesperson.

"It has proved successful. The customer gets great food and we can reinvest the service charge into keeping standards high and continue to improve our service."

Other restaurants involved include Japanese restaurants Matsuri and Tsunami, Mayfair pizzeria  Bocconcino and Chinese restaurants Barshu, Bashan and Baiwei.
