TripAdvisor: North beats South for UK's best rated hotels and restaurants
The awards were based on the millions of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions left on TripAdvisor's site over a twelve month period.
Though London and Edinburgh took the top two spots, smaller destinations Llandudno and Torquay took third and fourth place respectively, beating Liverpool, Belfast and York.
Keswick, a market town in the Lake District, is a newcomer to the top ten this year ranking ninth ahead of Glasgow.
In sixth position Blackpool was the cheapest destination on the list, with an average room costing £76.21 a night, less than half the cost of a room in London (£162.25).
TripAdvisor spokesperson James Kay said: “In the UK, the competition is fierce, with great value destinations like Llandudno and Blackpool more than holding their own against larger city rivals."
London fell from third to sixth place in the world rankings, but remained in the top ten for five years running.
The report follows an announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg in October last year that the government will provide £10m to drive tourism in the North of England.
