ODE True Food opens second Café-ODE in Devon
The new 150-cover Café-ODE opened at the Gara Rock resort, near Salcombe in Devon last week where it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
ODE True Food owner Tim Bouget said: “Gara Rock is a perfect place for our cafe-ODE brand, a spectacular location, close to the beach and on the coastal footpath. We are so excited about operating in the South Hams at this amazing landmark property as we’ll be able to continue to use the same incredible local producers and offer people a true taste of Devon.
"Our aim is to offer walkers, day trippers and beach goers ‘family friendly food that does not cost the earth.”
Café-ODE Gara Rock serves a daily changing menu with dishes including Pulled Duckaller Farm pork slider with South Devon chipotle chilli sauce, ODE ale-battered fish and fries and Sweet Soy-glazed Lyme Bay Mackerel. There are also plans to serve locally-caught crab and lobster.
Its drinks menu includes craft ales from Two Beach Brewing Co, local ciders and organic and bio-dynamic wines.
Bouget said the new business was trying to use as many of its existing suppliers as possible and had already secured a deal with a local waste contractor to provide a recycling service for itself and other local businesses.
Gara Rock was a popular holiday resort in the 1930s with actors Sir Lawrence Oliver and Margaret Rutherford amongst the hotel's famous guests. It was requisitioned by the RAF in 1940 to become a base for the nearby radar station at West Prawle before re-opening as a family hotel in 1946. It now includes a series of holiday cottages and apartments alongside the restaurant site taken over by ODE.
ODE True Food, which opened restaurant ODE Dining in Shaldon, Devon in 2009 puts sustainability at the heart of its business.
The company, which went on to open Café-ODE at Ness Cove in Shaldon in 2012, saw ODE Dining voted Sustainable Restaurant of the Year by the Sustainable Restaurant Association in 2012. Café-ODE then scooped the accolade in 2013 and 2014.
