The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has teamed up with former Made in Chelsea star Hugo Taylor to encourage consumers to check food hygiene ratings before booking a restaurant this Valentine’s Day.

According to an FSA poll, bad restaurant experiences are responsible for a third (34 per cent) of Valentine’s Day dating disasters, and 36 per cent of diners claim that food poisoning would be the worst thing that could happen to them on Valentine’s Day – above getting dumped (29 per cent).

However, less than half of those surveyed said they would check the food hygiene rating of a restaurant before booking their Valentine’s meal.

“A Valentine's Day meal needs to be special. After choosing flowers or chocolates, the next big question is where to go for that romantic meal," said the FSA.

"Our campaign thinks of you. Whether you’re planning to book early or deciding on the day, keep hygiene standards in mind when choosing where to eat. It's easy to look before you book at www.food.gov.uk/ratings​."

Taylor has produced a video for the campaign with his Valentine's Day dating tips - which include looking out for the black and green hygiene rating sticker in a restaurant window, or checking a venue's rating online.

The FSA previously urged consumers to check food hygiene ratings before eating out at Christmas,​ after research revealed that 39 per cent of people suspect they have contracted food poisoning from a restaurant or takeaway.
