Feeling valued is top priority for third of hospitality workers

Two thirds of hospitality workers believe it is important to feel passionate about a job while a third think feeling valued is a top priority, a survey looking into employee motivation has found.

The survey of 2,000 workers, carried out by Argos for Business for the UK’s first ever Employee Motivation Day (21 January), puts hospitality in the top 10 most motivated sectors with 63 per cent of those questioned saying they regard themselves as hard workers.

However, the survey also found that a third of employees will look at changing jobs this month, leaving employers with the headache of recruitment.

With the Office of National Statistics’ latest job market statistics showing that a record 30.8 million people are now in work and unemployment levels have dropped further, Danny Clenaghan managing director at Argos for Business urged hospitality bosses to start the year by recognising good work and motivating employees to get the best out of their workforce and avoid departure from the business.

Appreciation

“January always appears an opportune time for workers to weigh up their employment options. However, motivating staff and showing appreciation for their hard work year-round needn’t cost the earth,” he said.

“Motivation highly influences productivity within the hospitality industry, and our study reveals that a large proportion of Britain’s workers need to feel valued by their employer and colleagues to help motivate them to perform well.

“Simple and cost-effective everyday actions, such as saying thank you with low cost gift vouchers, a duvet day or allowing your team to leave 30 minutes early, can go a long way in ensuring bosses hold onto valuable skilled team members.”

The news comes as another survey by squash brand Robinsons Squashd found that hospitality workers are some of the most overworked in the UK, beaten only by workers in the research sector.
