Rick Stein confirms Porthleven restaurant opening

Chef and TV personality Rick Stein has confirmed he is taking over the Clay Quay restaurant in Porthleven, Cornwall.

Stein and his wife Jill signed the lease on the harbour-side restaurant last week. They plan to open in November, serving sharing plates of local and seasonal produce inspired by the chef’s travels around the world, with dishes including Singapore chilli crab, grilled sardines and squid and chorizo salad.

“We aren’t planning to make too many changes; we’ll be adding a few new dishes on the menu and the odd new painting – other than that we love the current concept,” said Stein. “It’s a great restaurant in a beautiful fishing town.”

Clay Quay, already a popular seafood destination in the Cornish town, is owned by Trevor Osborne, who also owns Porthleven Harbour with his family.

“We are very pleased to welcome Rick and Jill to Porthleven,” said Osborne.

“Porthleven’s growing reputation for good food will be further enhanced.  For the past five years, the village has hosted a Food and Music Festival which attracts circa 20,000 visitors to the village.

“We hope that the Stein reputation and involvement will add further to the attraction of the village as a wonderful destination with wonderful restaurants.”

The new restaurant follows Stein’s announcement that he will open his first restaurant outside Cornwall in Winchester in late Autumn, and will bring the total number of restaurants he runs with Jill and their sons to seven.
