Hotel search website Trivago has also released data showing London to be the most popular city to visit for the 5.2m Brits taking 'staycations' this August bank holiday, while Edinburgh is the most expensive.

The Trivago report shows the popularity of staycations this weekend, with its findings revealing that only four of the 20 most popular destinations for Brits to travel to over the Bank Holiday weekend are outside the UK.

The most popular destinations are London, Blackpool and Manchester, while four of the top 20 places to visit are coastal destinations.

Expensive Edinburgh

Trivago’s data shows Edinburgh to be the most expensive city to visit over the weekend, likely due to the bank holiday being over the last weekend of the Fringe Festival. The average cost of a night there that weekend is £203m, which is a 41 per cent increase from a night’s stay in the city in July, which cost on average £144. Prices have also increased in Liverpool, where the Summer Jam festival is taking place.

Denise Bartlett of UK Public Relations said:“Edinburgh has come under fire recently for inflated hotel prices during the popular Festival Fringe, so it is a shame to see hotel prices rise in Liverpool for a smaller event.”

Tourism spend

The holiday weekend will result in £1.2b tourism spend across the UK, and with four million people planning on taking their trips in England, £940m of the tourism spend will happen there.

There are still 15 per cent of Brits who are undecided on whether to go away for the weekend, with a number waiting to see what happens with the weather. Of those waiting to decide whether to go, 20 per cent are hoping to find last minute special deals or offers they can take advantage of.
