St John Bakery Rooms opens at Maltby Street Market
Open on Saturday and Sunday, The St John Bakery Rooms offers changing daily specials drawn from Fergus Henderson and Trevor Gulliver’s Michelin-starred restaurant and Smithfield dining room St John Bread and Wine.
Breakfast and brunch options include staples such as St John's legendary Old Spot bacon sandwiches and Welsh rarebit, while the lunch menu comprises of dishes such as pressed pig’s ear & chicory, pickled tripe, radishes & watercress and smoked cod's roe on toast.
Gulliver has developed a ‘short but handsome’ wine list with a selection of St John’s own wines to accompany the food.
Vibrant destination
The St John Bakery opened on Druid Street in November 2010, and now supplies bread, pastries and cakes to surrounding restaurants, cafes, food halls, as well as St John's own restaurants and Maltby Street market stall.
“Four years later Druid Street and Maltby Street through to Spa Terminus have become a vibrant weekend destination,” said a spokesperson.
“It felt like a natural extension to open the Bakery Room: a proper, sit-in space where you can relax over a menu drawn from across the St John repertoire, adding another dimension for our Bakery team.”
St John
St John was opened by Fergus Henderson and Trevor Gulliver in 1994, offering a new nose-to-tail cooking approach that helped define modern British cuisine.
In recognition of this extraordinary contribution to the culinary world, Henderson was given The Diners Club Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards 2014.
“Fergus Henderson has always carved his own path in the culinary world by creating a new approach to cooking and with it he has gained the respect and admiration of chefs and food lovers around the world,” said William Drew, group editor of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
St John was number 55 in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2014 top 100 list.
St John Bakery Rooms opened on 28 June on the Ropewalk at Arch 42, Maltby Street Market.
