Restaurant operators sought for new development at Swansea Bay

Developer Nextcolour Limited has unveiled plans for Oyster Wharf, a new development on the Mumbles waterfront in Swansea, with sites for three restaurant operators on the bay.

The development scheme aims to regenerate the area, and will see new retail outlets as well as a gym and spa join the area. The Art Deco inspired Tivoli building will also be rejuvenated as part of the development and reinstated as the focal point of the waterfront.

Commercial director at Nextcolour Developments Limited James Morse said: “We’re in the planning stages of the development now and that will end about July time. Then we’ll be starting construction onsite, hopefully in November or December, so by the end of 2015 or the beginning of 2016 the development will be done.”

The new development will have sites for three new restaurant operators on the bay at the seaside village of Mumbles, part of Swansea Bay.

Morse said: “Mumbles has a sophisticated family atmosphere and it’s a very well-known destination in Wales, both locally and regionally.

“The area is already a cultural and tourist hotspot but the regeneration is an investment in Mumbles’ future and we hope the development will continue this success and provide greater choice and improved amenities for the wider community.”

Although there are a number of retail boutiques in the village at Mumbles, the development will be the first to bring them to the waterfront, and aims to bring national retailers to the sites there. The development is being built on an old car parking area.

“We spent a lot of time working on the façade in detailed stone, we were looking to try and get a nice effect along the seafront. I wanted something that was different from what was there before,” said Morse.

Restaurant sites

Two of the restaurant sites will be around 3500sq.ft in size and will feature outdoor terraces overlooking the bay. The third restaurant will be built from the conversion of an old cinema and be situated on the third floor. This restaurant will be 6000sq.ft in size and will be able to sit 120 people, and also includes a rooftop bar area.

Morse said: “The sites will be overlooking the bay so customers will be able to look out and see the lighthouse and the castle, it’ll be pretty stunning. We’re looking to fill them with quality dining restaurants, good, upmarket restaurant chains and groups.

“We’ve had very strong initial interest already without marketing already, but we’re still looking for the right operators for the sites.”
