Marriott and Inter Ikea’s new Moxy hotel brand has secured a site by Aberdeen airport, with plans to open in early 2016.

The Marriott Moxy will have 200 bedrooms and be situated in the ABZ business park next to the airport. This will be the third hotel to be located in the business park, which ABZ Developments Ltd said will help Aberdeen’s hotel bed shortage.

ABZ Development Ltd and Inter Hospitality Holding are expected to submit a planning application to Aberdeen City Council by mid-May for development of the 60,000sq.ft building. Work on the hotel will begin immediately when planning permission is granted and is expected to cost £15m.

Moxy expansion

The Moxy brand was set up last year, a hotel aimed at the millennial traveler which combines contemporary design with lower prices. The brand is projected to reach 150 hotels within the next ten years, and plans to open sites in Munich, Berlin, Oslo, Frankfurt and Milan by the end of 2015.

Moxy hotels are designed to target younger customers who embrace new technology. The hotels feature open public spaces and complimentary state-of-the-art computers and Wi-Fi. Guestrooms will have upscale bath amenities, 42” flat screen televisions and built-in USB ports located throughout the room.

President and managing director of Marriott International in Europe Amy McPherson, said:  “Today’s global traveler is looking for a stylish travel experience with modern technology at an affordable price. The economy sector is the fastest growing segment in Europe, and we see tremendous opportunity to deliver a product that truly exceeds expectation.”

Pod and smaller format hotels are becoming more and more popular in the UK lately, Moxy among them.

Good news for Aberdeen

ABZ Development director Paul Stevenson said: “Aberdeen suffers from a well-documented imbalance of hotel beds available for the thousands of international visitors who do business in our city. The prospect of hosting a Moxy hotel on our ABZ Business Park is tremendous news and not only goes some way to addressing the beds deficit but adds a distinctive new dimension to Aberdeen’s hotel offering.

“The Moxy brand is aimed at younger, value-conscious but technologically astute travellers and we are delighted Marriott and Inter Hospitality have chosen to locate one of the first UK hotels in Aberdeen.

“With a £13m redevelopment of the airport terminal underway and passenger numbers forecast to grow by 20 per cent over the next six years, we are doing our part to ensure that accommodation standards meet the ambitions of Aberdeen Airport and befit the city’s position as Europe’s oil capital.”
