The first DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Scotland’s capital city has opened following a £4.2 million renovation.

The hotel has 138 rooms and stands in Edinburgh’s historic old town, within walking distance of the Royal Mile and Princes Street. It is located on Bread Street in the former St Cuthbert’s Co-Operative building which dates back to 1892.

The building previously housed the Point Hotel but has been completely refurbished by Scottish-based hotel management company, Redefine|BDL Hotels, which will continue to operate the business.

General manager of DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh City Centre Ronald Little said: “The building has a rich history in the city and it has been wonderful to see it so carefully transformed into a truly remarkable property. My team and I are looking forward to welcoming guests to the DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh City Centre to deliver a memorable experience.”

The new DoubleTree features a domed roof, brasserie style restaurant and a top floor penthouse which offers views of Edinburgh Castle.

President of EMEA Hilton Worldwide Simon Vincent said: “Edinburgh was voted European Destination of the Year at the World Travel Awards 2012 and is the second most popular tourist destination in the UK after London. We are delighted to be expanding the Hilton Worldwide portfolio here.”

Features and design

The Edinburgh DoubleTree has a number of ‘deluxe’ rooms and suites which offer views of the iconic castle and beyond. The penthouse features an outdoor decking area with panoramic views of Edinburgh’s skyline.

The hotel hosts a conference venue which can hold up to 120 guests as well as three additional meeting rooms. It also has a 24-hour business centre.

Dining options include the ‘Monboddo’ bar and the ‘Bread Street Brasserie’, the hotel’s award-winning restaurant which serves a range of dishes emphasising freshness and flavour.

On the first Thursday of every month the hotel transforms its Penthouse venue into a sky bar where guests and locals can purchase cocktails while taking in the views of the city. The hotel also has a 24-hour fitness centre with cardio equipment and free weights.

Global head of DoubleTree by Hilton John Greenleaf said: “It is with great pride that we announce the opening of our first hotel in Edinburgh.  We look forward to introducing DoubleTree by Hilton’s CARE service culture, built around the idea of creating a rewarding experience for guests, team members and the community.”

Hampton by Hilton

Last month Hampton by Hilton also opened a new hotel in London Waterloo. This is Hampton’s first hotel in central London and hosts 297 guest rooms, making it the largest Hampton by Hilton property outside the US.

It is located near London Waterloo station and in easy reach of the city centre via a number of underground lines.

General manager at Hampton by Hilton London Waterloo Faycal Bennani said: “Hampton by Hilton London Waterloo offers guests affordable accommodation, without compromising on location."
