Institute of Hospitality announces 75th anniversary award winners

The best managers in the industry have been honoured at the Institute of Hospitality’s 75th Anniversary Gala Dinner, held last week at The Westbury in London

Graham Crump, group executive chef at the University of Warwick, picked up the Innovation in Management Award. Judges praised Crump for revitalising food production at the University, and providing strategic direction across his site in ‘a creative and effective way’.

The Outstanding Leadership Award went to Stuart Johnson, general manager at Brown’s Hotel. Claimed by the judges to ‘lead by example’, Johnson was said to have shown a commitment to developing staff and giving them the right opportunities to enhance their careers.

Meanwhile, Marriott International revenue manager Kristian Nenchev received the Highest Achieving Student Award. Only the second person to have won a full Merit Scholarship at The Hague hotel school, Nenchev graduated two months ago and now manages 13 Marriott hotels.

Nenchev’s prize includes a career development opportunity donated by online hotel booking engine provider Avvio. Nenchev will take a two-week position at Avvio’s headquarters in Limerick, Republic of Ireland, where he will work with the digital marketing and revenue management teams.

Career prospects

Arthur De Haast, chairman of the Institute’s executive council, presented the winners with their awards.

He said: “The Institute of Hospitality has played an important role in helping thousands of people, including myself, grow and develop exciting careers.

“In today’s fast-moving world, engagement and communication are more crucial than ever. Longevity and continuity are also important, and membership of the Institute of Hospitality provides a real feeling of belonging and identity, wherever your career may take you.”

The sell-out event was sponsored by The Westbury, CEN Wholesale Candle Suppliers, Boutinot Wines, Belvoir Fruit Farms, Colourbond Design & Print and London Audio Visual.

Prizes were donated by Avvio, The Goring, Grosvenor House Hotel, The Savoy, Lancaster London, The Halkin and Rhubarb.
