Sandman snaps up second Signature hotel

Canadian hotel operator Sandman has acquired the Ramada Plaza Gatwick hotel, which will become its second UK property under the Sandman Signature brand after a refurbishment.

The 151-bedroom hotel, situated four miles from Gatwick Airport in Crawley, features a restaurant and bar, a residents’ gym and a conference centre with twelve meeting rooms for up to 200 delegates. It joins the Sandman Signature hotel in Newcastle, which the group opened in 2011.

“Sandman Signature was the brand we chose to bring to our first UK location in Newcastle upon Tyne,” said Taj Kassam, president and chief operating officer of Sandman Hotel Group. “We’re now looking to build on that success with the hotel at Gatwick.”

Will McKay, a partner in law firm Muckle LLP, which advised Sandman on the deal, added: “It’s great news that Sandman have made this acquisition after the success of their Newcastle hotel. We are delighted to play our part in helping Sandman to implement their ambitious plans to expand.

“This transaction involved acquiring the property assets as well as the business operations. It’s a great acquisition for Sandman and we look forward to working with them again in future.”

Europe expansion

The four-star hotel will feature a variety of room types including fully-furnished, self-catering suites. Free, high-speed internet access will also be available throughout the property.

The privately-owned Sandman Hotel Group owns more than 40 hotels, resorts, inns and suites across Canada and is now actively looking for other sites across the UK and in Europe.

Upon opening the first site in Newcastle, Sandman’s UK director Mitchell Gaglardi said: “We are confident that Sandman Signature will prove an ideal destination for both visitors and residents who will now be able to see at first hand the high standard of care that has gone into creating this unique hotel.”
