Simpson’s Hotel in Aberdeen has been bought by the owners of a five-star property in Edinburgh and will re-open under a new brand next year, aimed at the luxury market.

Graham and Gillian Wood, who own The Chester Residence in Edinburgh’s West End, bought the 19th century listed property on Aberdeen’s Queens Road in April and will re-open it as The Chester Hotel in January 2014.

A £5m construction and refurbishment programme will see a refreshment of the hotel’s existing 49 bedrooms along with the addition of 14 luxury guestrooms and the development of a new fine-dining restaurant with a refurbished lounge bar.

Graham Wood explained that the new-look hotel will be similar in look and feel to his property in the Scottish capital.

“The Chester Residence has become Edinburgh’s leading small five star hotel, recently winning a number of significant industry awards, and we aim to create something equally special in Aberdeen,” he said.

“Whilst The Chester Hotel will be much larger, we’ve chosen a similar look and feel to Edinburgh’s Chester Residence, which we believe will appeal to our business travellers as well as guests on an indulgent weekend break.”

The Chester Hotel’s new fine-dining restaurant and lounge bar will both be overseen by executive chef Kevin Dalgleish, with both venues serving up some of Scotland’s best produce.

Conferences and weddings

The hotel will also feature a brand-new function suite that can accommodate weddings and large corporate dinners of up to 180 guests or conferences for up to 300.

“After purchasing the property in spring 2012 we assessed the business and as a result of demand decided to develop larger function spaces”, added Wood.

“At the same time, we took the opportunity to refurbish and upgrade our existing bedrooms, giving them a more luxurious feel, whilst adding additional rooms and two suites to satisfy customer demand.”

The Chester Hotel is also set to appeal to couples looking for their perfect wedding venue, with Wood adding: “Put simply, our dedicated wedding planner is here to make the couple’s dreams come true.

“Whilst we will offer wedding packages to make planning easier for brides to be, there will be no such thing as a standard wedding at The Chester Hotel as we’re keen to accommodate individual plans.”

The Chester Hotel will open on Aberdeen’s Queens Road in January 2014.
