Wagamama appoints David Campbell chief executive
Campbell will join the 94-strong restaurant group in September, taking over the role from Steve Easterbrook, who returned to former employer McDonald’s in April.
Campbell has worked in the leisure sector for the past 20 years, most recently as group board director and managing director of Allsport, the company globally responsible for Formula One advertising, sponsorship, hospitality and merchandising.
His previous roles include president and chief executive of O2 owner AEG Europe where he oversaw the transformation of the Millennium Dome into the O2; chief executive of VisitLondon and of Virgin Radio and Ginger Media Group.
Leisure experience
Wagamama chairman David Williams said Campbell’s experience developing some of the UK’s biggest leisure brands were a major attraction.
“His proven leadership and his experience developing some of the UK's biggest leisure brands will be invaluable as we continue to expand Wagamama both in the UK as well as in other global markets.
“David is an entrepreneurial and motivated leader, with a very strong commercial focus, and we look forward to working with him at this important stage in Wagamama’s development.”
Campbell said he was looking forward to helping to develop the brand, which is looking to open 20 sites per year to reach its target of 300 sites.
“This is an exciting and unique opportunity; great people throughout the company, food that is as good and relevant today as it’s ever been, and a brand with fantastic DNA,” he said. “I look forward to being part of the team as we continue to grow wagamama.”
