South African burger giant Steers into the UK

South African flame-grilled burger chain Steers is making its first foray into the UK this summer with a first site opening in Clapham next month which could potentially be the first of many.

Owned by Famous Brands – which also owns Wimpey – Steers currently has 505 restaurants in South Africa and 43 spread across Africa. Chief executive Kevin Hedderwick said the prospect of entering the UK has been on the cards for some time.

“We’ve always considered exporting Steers to the UK, fuelled by the constant requests from many expatriates living in London craving a taste of home,” said Hedderwick. “Having looked at the market we believe that the quality, freshness and taste of our flame-grilled products will create as much excitement and recognition in the UK as in South Africa.”

The UK menu will emulate that of South Africa’s, with items including the King Steer Burger, Rave Burger, and the new Steers flame-grilled peri peri chicken.

The Clapham restaurant will mainly focus on a takeaway offering when it opens in the first week of July.
